Hand-made Woodland Gnomes & Children

A toy is something your child invests precious time in and in this way it acts as a teacher. The right toy can teach your child to care, to be watchful and conscious, to be careful, to appreciate, to love. In your child’s hands are the keys to learning to be grateful, to appreciate beauty, to have a sense of peace and reverence for life in all its forms.

A hand-crafted doll is one of a kind, an individual which carries the spirit of the maker in its stitches and absorbs the spirit of the child who loves it. All children treasure handmade dolls. The special relationship between a child and his/her doll is dynamic, and often mysterious, as all relationships are. It is about love and nurturing, friendship and ownership, the emergence of self.

Gnomes. Are they REAL? Gnomes, like fairies have a real importance whether you believe in seeing them, or not.  When we experiment with believing in Gnomes (make-believe), we explore the unseen world: the subtle world of forces and energies that affect all of us in ways that we are usually unaware of.

Art

All of my art is inspired either from music that I hear or images that pop into my head unannounced. Sometimes the image is there when I awake from a dream, sometimes it just appears. Often it is un-formed but the aura of the image is playing in my head - popping in and out like a game of hide and seek. When the image is illusive I'll often go and find images online that make up the form of what I need to create. I'm not above finding a nice piece of unlicensed clip art and using it as the basic form of the piece. In that way I can hold the image long enough to produce a piece.

The dolls often have no pre-formed image in my mind. Rather, they are beings who develop in my hands. Gnomes, Tooth Fairies, Dream Dolls and Personal Empowerment Dolls all begin as one of three basic doll forms I'm currently using.  The persona they develop is a mystery - even to me - until it's finished. Then I realize what I've created, or at least brought forward into the tangible realm.
